  • Lent

    Enter Lent.
Our household is going to do it together so we can keep each other accountable, grow together, and then, after 40 days, celebrate together. =)

For me, I considered a few options.
40 days of trying to give up:

    a) shopping
    b) coffee, chocolate, and fastfood
    c) facebook and tv
    d) blunt remarks that have no care for how it might make people feel.

I'm not sure how I will go about measuring whether I did it or not, but I have decided I won't think too much upon where I slipped up, but focus instead on, as Kat put it, how I might "use wittiness to build others up".

A quick little quote from Christine Sine (thx to Kat!)
"Lent is not really about sacrifice or deprivation. In the early church, this was a time of preparation for those about to be baptized. Today it is more often regarded as a season of soulsearching and repentance for all Christians as a preparation for the joy and celebration of Easter."

Jon calls the "joy and celebration of Easter" part the "sharing in the resurrection of Jesus" at the end of Lent.

I might call it "giving something up and finding sufficiency in Jesus--and then our character growing in Christlikeness is the bonus."

  • Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock...

That's the song I kept requesting whenever we sang Christmas songs together.  =b
At first it was "ohh-ohhh, Star of wonder, star of night, star of royal beauty bright..." but it actually turns out to be a downer if everybody isn't yelling at the top of their lungs - belligerently.

So, I'm not posting a year in pictures, but I'm posting new ones!
Yes, the only reason I whip out a camera is Christopher, but it doesn't mean the pictures are ALL of him!  (well, sometimes they are.)

Here Chris meets Tyrone, and they enjoy the wafting of Starbuck fumes but never get to try any.

"Why can't you get that TPS report to me again?"

Merry Christmas and drooly new year!

Christopher popped both collars later on in the day.  It was pretty stylin'.

Today we had dinner with Real Auntie Chrissy (RAC) and Real Uncle Julian (RUJ).  Together, they make "Raj."
Dinner w/ Raj is always fun, as is dindin with the grandparents.

Because yesterday was the big sh-bang turkey dinner, today was T&T take out (cha siu and soya chicken) with potstickers and a yummy yummy salad.

What is your favourite salad?  This was surprisingly refreshing and yummy.

    Lettuce leaves, apple, avocado, cucumber.
Dressing made of lime juice, honey, olive oil, and salt.  Can it get any easier?  No.  Can it get any more refreshing?  Not unless you drench it with ice and watermelon cubes.  But then again, I don't like watermelon.  ---which leads me to ask, if you're watching Top Chef, how did Ariane win with those slices of watermelon?

    Enough rambling!
A Merry Christmas to you, and may family and friends all be near by!

    ps . latest books:
    Susan Cooper:  The Grey King
Joe Haldeman:  Camouflage (it won hugo and nebula awards!)
Red Moon Rising (book on prayer...it's awesome!)
Jean Vanier:  Becoming Human.  If you're filled with despair or hate, I think this would help you ... become human.  lol. It was written as a Massey lecture.  It's well written!
Sandra Boynton:  Birthday Monsters.  If you've ever read this 10-page suspenseful thriller, you'd agree that the main character has more TUCK YUEN in him than anyone else!

  • What a sitting baby can accomplish...

A sitting baby can ride a horse.

    .
A sitting baby can eat solids. This here on Chris' face, this mixture of orange (carrot) and green (peas), creates brown.

    .
Can you also poo in style?

    .
  • TWIm: at 6 months

Today is the first of many things.

    1) first time eating peas!

    2) first time trying out the mini-size toilet seat on the toilet

    3) first pee into the toilet!

    4) first super solid poo (more like really really thick paste….that has dried out and caked onto his bum)

    5) first time playing catch!  Christopher catches by throwing both arms downwards towards the object–about one second after the object has landed in his lap. It’s hilarious.  He loves it, and he smiles widely, but those arms are still one second behind!

    6) The first black president to be voted into office! Wow Obama!

    Ahhh, a day of firsts!

  • Tuesday, October 7 2008, 10:10pm

It is so windy outside that I swear the door is gonna fly off the hinges!

The sturdy apple tree branches rooting up from the ground are even swaying fiercely.  Mind you, these are not spindly little sheaves of wheat but huge thick branches.  And they're flying around like joysticks on a Twinbee game!

Tonight is gonna be snow and rain showers, with a "feels like" -2 degrees.

    NOOOOOO!!!Must get snow tires.

  • Fall 2008 Chris hits 5 months

Since today reached the crazy heights of 21 degrees jon chris and I went for a quick visit to Borden Park.
I laid out the bamboo mat and placed Chris down for some tummy time.  But because he can only last for one or two minutes before he starts whimpering, I turned him over before he decided to really howl, and what followed was the cutest thing I had ever seen.

Chris was mesmerized by the yellow and green leaves swaying left and right above him.  His eyes were wide open with such delight, and his super cute rounded mouth cooed continuously. Here a natural mobile could not compar e to the cheerful but slightly tacky man-made version that spins above his crib.  =b

    Chris' view:

    His reaction:

and yet, strangely, sometimes I'm attracted more to bright, neon, gaudy lights and architecture instead of the mountains and sunset.  Big, towering, artsy buildings can be a great distraction (great in both senses of the word), but I guess in the end what I saw today at Borden Park could put up some fierce competition for Somewhere Downtown.

    Check out the park scene!

  • why I don't respect nicholas sparks

admittedly I haven't seen the Notebook, but then again I always stayed far away from it b/c of how it was publicized, how melodramatic it looked in the previews...etc etc
That and I was forced to watch a Walk to Remember over and over while living with Serina..we had no other vhs video except a 1 hr portion of an NSYNC concert filmed live in Atlanta.

    But comparing yourself to...Shakespeare?  sigh!

  • Tummy Time with Christopher, 4.5 months old.

Well, Christopher is exactly at the 4 and a half month mark.

He’s half the height of Kat King, our friend below, and he’s heavier than his buddy Grayson, who is turning one year old come October. (yikes!)

Now he’s really bringing on the social smiling, laughing aloud when Daddy throws him in the air or blows raspberries on his tummy.  Chris also started reaching for toys on his own—to immediately stick into his mouth.  So far he’s licked three pages of his “Where’s Spot?” book, a Compassion Today magazine picture, and many many fuzzy stuffed animals.  I don’t know how much lint is gathering in his system, but a hairball is forthcoming, whether throughthe front or the bottom.  =C

He’s also learning to jump in his JOlly Jumper on his own, without needing an adult to hold his hands to get going.  It’s really cute, because we put on some fun African music or “Take the Lead” soundtrack, adn we bounce together while I do the dishes.  It’s feels satisfying, somehow, to know he’s doing something that doesn’t involve lying on his back.  He’s sitting up in his bumbo chair once in a while, (that’s one more thing he does off his back), but it’s a tight squeeze, and for some reason he tends to poop while sitting in there.  Maybe this means toilet training will come naturally for him.  =b

So a day in the life of Mini Lim involves having breakfast with Regis and Kelly’s voice babbling on in the background, then a little relaxing in his rocking chair while watching Mom make her breakfast.  After that, it’s some play gym time, some jumping time, and then p erhaps a walk through the neighbourhood in the stroller. These activities are usually punctuated by a diaper change at the beginning or the end.

All of this sounds so mundane, and yet it takes loads of time to get through them.

So last week, for the first time, christopher went to the zoo!!  He saw the ducks and the sheep and goats make their noises.  In REAL LIFE.  We’ve been making hte noises and looking at pictures of animals in books adn flashcards, but never has it happened for REALZ.  It was probably more fun for Mom, but whatever.

If you ever go to the zoo on a weekday, it’s 98% filled with people with STROLLERS.  IT’s all moms or dads walking around!  IT’s nuts!  When you line up for snacks, it’s behind mothers with toddlers.  When you walk towards Boris the tiger, it’s beside parents with strollers.  When you stroll past the washroom, you onnly hear children’s voices!  It’s insane!  If you wonder where all the parents are:  at the zoo!  They are part of the attraction!  (that and all the malls.)

Notice the people in the background?  Stroller.

    Other milestones for Chris:

    a) losing hair …in clumps.  IN the mornings he’s got hair all over his mattress from where he’s been rubbing his head all night.

    b) still fighting eczema.  Be brave, little derma-warrior.

    c) drooley, drooley, drooly.

    d) wearing 6-12 month or 9 month clothing.

    e) starting to show anxiety when not being held by Mom.  Jon and I are determined to get him trained up to be held by anyone, anywhere.

    f) tummy time is still a struggle, but he can stay on his tummy for about 10 minutes…..

Being a parent and watching a child struggle with something he really hates makes me want to help him out of that discomfort immediately.  When he struggles with tummy time, his face wedged into the blankets, his face rubbing left and right, his piteous cries echoing through the house, I struggle with not rescuing him.  “Just leave him and let him learn,” says Jon, but I’m a hoverer.  I hover left and right.  But in the end, I know it’s good for him, and that the more tummy time he gets, the more good development that happens for him.

It’s the same with being babysat by different people.  We realize that though the first few times may be hellish (for the babysitter, really) b/c Chris will cry and scream without his parents nearby, it’s worth it in the end, because he’ll get used to it and calm down the next time.  There’s always that initial battle against unfamiliarity and discomfort to get to the good stuff, the part where confidence and serenity occur. Already I’m beginning to notice Chris spending time on his tum with a much calmer demeanour.

It’s been the same lesson again and again with parenting!  I wonder what the next big battle will be!

  • Chris is now exactly 3 months old and toggling between the smiling face or the INTENSE STARE face. You’re lucky if you get to see both.

The sentences he’s been hearing for the past few days:

“Don’t forget–I”m your REAL uncle. Everyone else is a FAKE uncle.” - Uncle Julian

“No holding hands until you’re thirty.” - Auntie Stella, responding to whether Chris (3 months) could hold Hannah’s (11 mos.) hand.

“This cinnamon bun is good. It has no yeast in it. It’s got pecans…” - Auntie Kat, upon jumping into the car next to Chris.

“The ciabatta is better than the baguette. I recommend the ciabatta.” - Auntie Chrissy, inside Capers, pushing Chris’ stroller.

“Yes! Her dress is also from RW&Co! And they’re the SAME colour—” Auntie Bonnie, suggesting that my dress is eerily similar to someone’s bridesmaids’ dresses.

“‘We only serve you WILD SALMON.” - Daddy, reading the menu cover at Shiro.

“Aww! A little bear bum!” - Auntie Chrissy

So far Daddy’s been golfing with a red-shirt from the Star Trek Fleet, Mr. Michael Han, on his bachelor party day, and Mommy’s been dining at Dinesty with Auntie Chrissy in Richmond and strolling around Oakridge. So this is where all the brand names are camping out! Gosh. I haven’t seen so many brand names hanging out together in such a small space.

Chris slept peacefully through the shopping expedition, and then he awoke in time for dinner with Grandpa at the Shaolin Noodle House.

To date, Chris is probably 17lb and something ounces, and he’s 26 inches tall. He’s still off the charts, according to Dr. Chrissy. He’s also social smiling; if youi approach him and give him a bit of attention (especially after a long ’bout of play-by-yourself-time), he smiles! He lights up and grins - it’s a great reward. Chris is also trying hard to stand when you hold him up, and he’s sitting in his bumbo chair, although his head does the Roxbury wobble the entire time. It’s pretty amusing.

To answer last time’s question, Chris did very well on the airplane! No crying! WE’re so very proud.

Next post: How will Chris find his very first wedding ceremony? Will he enjoy the milk of a Thomas Haas croissant? we’ll find out!

    Update: August 4, 2008
11:12am Chris rolls over! After a full day of unsuccessful rolling onto his side, Chris finally mastered the roll-over. Too bad he gets stuck on his face once he does it.

The past weekend was chock-a-block filled with activity.

Chris attended his first ever wedding. Mike Han got married at 10th Ave Alliance to the beautiful Min Cha, and Chris met some other (korean) babies. They also get the privilege of sitting in peg perego strollers. It's a bit much, but it's really funny when all the strollers are lined up side by side.

According to Jon, Min Cha cried through a majority of the ceremony, and it wasn't until the very end when Mike finally gathered his wits about him and handed her that very much-needed tissue. LOL!
Here we see the couple at their dinner reception at Stanley Park. It's beautiful in there. Have you ever walked in the Rose Garden? I don't remember having ever done it!

Actually, the weekend would seem much more interesting through pictures than speak, so here we are:

    at the wedding reception!
FOUR generations! Chris meets "Tai Gong"
Visiting Coal Harbour with Mom, Dad, Auntie Kat and Grandma (Auntie Kat and Grandma sold separately.)
